Have you got good Chi?
I was watching a video clip of a renowned and influential 'spiritual teacher' teaching his techniques on YouTube the other day (I won't mention the name of the teacher or the particular technique he was teaching in case I upset the orders) and I thought to myself, 'He has get no energy! How can he hope to empower and uplift other people?" I think of the same when I watch some western tai chi 'masters' showing off their power or techniques on YouTube, sadly with sagged postures, lustreless eyes and fragmented movements - no energy at all!
You can always tell if someone has got good chi/energy or not, even by watching their videos. A real 'teacher' or master doesn't have to brag about their credentials but their very presence speaks of it. One only has to be in the presence of such a teacher to be engulfed by their energy and power to feel an uplift in spirit.
Me and my partner (also a Tai Chi enthusiast) can never forget the first time we met Li Lian, my Tai Chi teacher, in Beijing a few years ago. We simultaneously started to feel a sensation of surging energy the body as our teacher was approaching before we could even see him (he was concealed by some thick bushes around the courtyard patio where the students were gathering). The late Grandmaster Wu Tu Nan used to wear sun-glasses all the time just to conceal the lustre from his eyes which would startle an unprepared person in close range. I met an older tai chi guy, one of the many who used to learn Tai Chi from Grandmaster Wu, years back when I was living in the suburb of Beijing. He recalled one occasion when he said something which obviously upset the Grandmaster during a practice session. Wu gave him a quick glance from near distance which nearly threw him off balance!
If one is imbued with good chi, it's bound to be shown in the eyes because one's eyes are where one's spirit gathers. And spirit is the sublimated, purified and concentrated form of chi, energy and ching (vitality). It will also fills the ambiance with good vibrations and anyone who is within this 'qi chang' (energy field ) will feel the impact.
The Yellow Emperor's Internal Cannon of Medicine (Huang Di Nei Jing《黄帝内经》) says,
He who knows the Tao has his energy pathways always unclogged. "知道者,气脉常通"
'What is the connection between the Tao (the Truth, the Ultimate Reality) and one's energy pathways (where chi/vital force circulates inside the body)?', one might well wonder.
The answer is, if one hasn't got good sufficient chi, one cannot establish full contact with the energy/power from the cosmic source. The Divine (or God whichever way you want to call it) does not make itself known to us by appearing in visions or in the sky. Each individual is connected to him through the vital force, the cosmic energy, the chi which is immemorial, primeval and primordial. But the pure sublime energy in the human body (often called yang chi in Taoist alchemy work) gets dissipated day by day as one's mind gets impure (after the age of 16) through negative emotions, excessive activities and psychic burdens.
In a way, Chi serves as a link between the body, the mind and the spirit in a human. Smooth and balanced functioning of the body and the mind both depends on good healthy chi in the body. To make the mind peaceful and stable, one has to nurture his chi. To stay in good health one also has to nurture his chi. In fact chi is such an essential element in the life of the Chinese that the Chinese language itself is imbued with the usage of it in expressions. For examples,
get/be angry - sheng chi, 'stir up the chi'
be discouraged - chi lei, 'chi weakend'
disposition - chi zhi, 'quality of chi'
not amused, not pleased - mei hao qi 'has no good chi about...'
die - duan qi, 'his chi is cut'
uprightness, rectitude, integrity - you zheng qi, 'have honest chi'
healthy, robust - qi zu, 'have abundant chi'
full of power and grandeur - qi tun shan he his chi envelopes mountains and rivers
shen hun qi zhuo - spirit dim and chi muddled
There are many many more similiar examples.
So, chi seems to be used as a criteria to judge a person's character, temperament, mental and physical health.
Jing (vitality), chi (energy) and shen (spirit) are considered the three treasures of the human body both in the system of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Taoist alchemy work.
Jesus said, "empty yourself and I will fill you up." Empty of what and fill up with what? Empty of mind stuff and fill up with good chi, I believe.
Good thought cannot take place of good chi. It doesn't matter what sublime or divine thought you conjure up in your mind, they will never give you illumination and true grace. Those who wish to do healing work must process abundant good chi themselves before they can use it to heal others. One doesn't become a 'energy healer' or Reiki healer by simply joining a course to learn a few tricks and then get a certificate. One has to carry out arduous 'energy work' oneself first to purify and cultivate his own chi before he can hope to use it for healing purposes. To put it simply, if one hasn't got good chi, one cannot be a genuine 'spiritual teacher' or 'healer'.
